Past Continuous Tense Rules with Examples

Identification ➡ In Past Continuous Tenses, the continuation of work is found in the past tense. These sentences end with words like “raha tha, rahi thi, rahe the” etc. Example –

• I was sleeping deeply.
• King Dasharatha was hunting in the forest.
• Girls were not going to school.
• Why were some people going empty handed?

(A) Affirmative Sentences

👉 Rule 1 : Using ‘was’ with he, she, it, i and singular noun subject, we put ‘ing’ at the end of the first form of the verb; Example –

• I
  was reading my book.
• She
  was singing a sweet song.

👉 Rule 2 : Using ‘we’ with you, we, they and plural noun subject, we put ‘ing’ at the end of the first form of the verb; Example –

• They
  were playing football.
• We
  were learning our lesson.
• You
  were calling my servant.

(B) Negative Sentences

👉 Rule: In Negative Sentences, ‘not’ is used after ‘was’ or ‘were’, and the rest of the rules are same as Affirmative Sentences; Example – •   They were not going home.

• Ram was not jumping   form the wall. • We   were not sleeping on the table. • I   was not going to school. • He   was not buying a cow.

(C) Interrogative Sentences

👉 Rule 1 : In Interrogative Sentences, was or were is placed before the subject and ing is added to the verb. If the first word in the sentence is “what”, then do not use what for “what”; Example –

• Were we going
  to market?
•
  Was Mohan abusing his servant?
• Was I not going with you
  ?

👉 Rule 2 : If any of the interrogative words “why, what, when, where, how” etc. is given in the middle of the sentence, then first put its English and then put was or were; Example –

•
  Why was the farmer not ploughing his field?
• What was he doing in
  the room?

👉 Rule 3 : Along with How much, How many, Whose etc., their related nouns are also used; Example –

• How
  many boys were playing in the field?

👉 Rule 4 : If the interrogative word i.e. “who” is acting as the subject in the sentence, then its English is used first, followed by was or were; Example –

• Who
  was weeping in the class?

👉 Rule 5 : In Interrogative Negative Sentences, not is used before the main verb; Example – •   Were

those boys not making a noise? • Why was the farmer not ploughing his field?   👉 Rule 6 : A question mark (?) is used at the end of the sentence.
